Does a water detox work?

Question by Freddie N: Does a water detox work?
I quit smoking 3 years ago and still haven’t recovered properly, so I started a simple detox programme 5 weeks ago. It involves taking 5 to 6 glasses of water daily & some fresh fruit juice, no caffeine drinks or alcohol & no food containing spices eg. chillies etc. Also, I’m eating virtually no fried food. But, the question is, will it actually work or make me feel better? I’m still undecided. I never really smoked that much anyway! If you have some good answers please let me know. Thankyou.

Each rehab programme differs. Three months is not a particularly long time in rehab, the more successful ones last from 12 to 18 months, however, people do complete the shorter ones successfully. Hopefully there will be some sort of halfway house arrangement for when you come out, not to mention support. However, if there is not, then go to the local Substance Missuse Team in the borough where the rehab is and they will be able to help you, hopefully, or at least give you some pointers on where to get help. You will find it hard getting housed though, as a single man, unless you are assessed and found to be more vulnerable than the next single male out there. Technically, being a recovering alcoholic may mean they consider you more at risk, but many places do not take into consideration any form of addictive disorder, which is just plain wrong.

Try getting in touch with the St Mungos project, they are brilliant at working with homeless men and really know their stuff. I know a few people who have been housed with their help, it doesn’t happen overnight, but if you persist, you will get there. Same with chasing sobriety, if you want it bad enough and are prepared to fight for it, you will get there.

Best of luck, I hope it all goes well for you, you may well find that there is a lot of aftercare with your rehab. God bless.
