how many people were treated for prescription drug addiction in UK / USA between 2000 and 2006?

Question by Claire R: how many people were treated for prescription drug addiction in UK / USA between 2000 and 2006?

Answer by dog’n’2cats
I would imagine the number is enormous! Sorry I don’t know the answer but I found out that a TINY pharmacy around the corner in the village where I live, gives out over 20000 prescriptions a year. If I’d had to guess, I’d have thought it was less than 2000. It’s an enormous problem – with so many prescriptions dished out – the number of addicts will be huge.

Addiction to Prescription Meds?

Question by Sally Lloyd: Addiction to Prescription Meds?
Theoretically, in the case of addiction to a prescription drug like diazepam-
a) how long might it be before the drug becomes very difficult to give up?
b) what kind of effects might follow rapid changes in dosage (50 mg one day, 10 the next etc, etc)?

All help appreciated.
p.s. I’m a writer, not an addict, and I just can’t cut through the jargon on most online sites!

It doesn’t matter what kind of drug it is there is always risk of becoming addicted to them. Diazepam is very, very, addicting and can take a long time to come off of. Just because they are prescriptions does not mean they are okay. I would think hard on why you have to have them in the FIRST place. These kinds of drugs are given for short periods of time because of their high potential to become addicted to them.

Answer by Jeffrey P
Narcotics, dihydrocodiene, and sedatives can be addictive. However, if you have chronic pain that cannot be relieved by other means (surgery, therapy, and/or non-narcotic medicine), it may be appropriate to take narcotics. You may well get dependent (go through withdrawal is the drug is stopped) and tolerant (need progressively higher doses over time). However, most people who take narcotics for legitimate reasons do not become “addicted”.

Addiction is more than physical dependence. It is the seeking of a substance such that it injures your health and social relationships. Addiction can start with the treatment of acute pain, and can happen with the treatment of long term pain.
